Why I am happy with “average investing returns”

In my opinion, the best life lived is one that is quiet.

Same goes for wealth. Overnight successes are rare. Staying on top is rare. The media writes about the successful billionaires, but just how many of them are there, and how many billions of normal humans on earth are just trying to exist?

MOST people reading this are not going to beat the stock market average. So if you can’t beat them, join them. And this is why I love the stock market – ANYONE can get it in on it, it’s way easier than real estate, and requires just a few hours a year to maintain. The stock market has historically returned ~10% a year (assuming dividends are re-invested, nominal returns). Even if you don’t get ~10% fully (as inflation, taxes, expenses, eat away at this), the growth is still quite respectable compared to your alternative.

Furthermore, I quite like the buy and hold strategy because it has been proven to beat the majority of active trading strategies in the long haul. Most professionally managed investment funds, still do not outperform the market in the long run, because humans are not that great at predicting the future.

Finally, I want to spend my precious time with my family and loved ones, not stuck in front of a computer screen trading stocks. The stock market just needs you to be patient, it does not need you to be active. But it’s not sexy because I do nothing when it comes to investing.
