Fun and frugal: BBs third birthday party

BB’s birthday was in October, and we invited over a few of our long-term friends (from high school, college, and bschool) who lived all over Socal to celebrate. We ended up hosting about ~12 adults + 6 kids at our home. BB is a major introvert, so I landed on a fall theme / pumpkin theme to keep the birthday party low-key (and also, frugal)

The food

No Save My Cents party goes without some yummy food! I focused on mainly a savory spread, and also, my cake making skills are not up to par so will be buying birthday cakes until I fix that.

Homemade Pinterest looking charcuterie board (includes baguette, whole wheat crackers, water crackers, beef sausage, plant based charcuterie, brie, cheddar, goat cheese, gouda, grapes, nuts): $46, with lots of leftovers to spare. From Aldi’s and Whole Foods.

Cake / Whole Foods Cake – after original cake failed, paid $30 for a cake from Whole Foods. The original cake was make into a parfait with whipped cream and strawberries

Fruit board: Sliced apples and grapes
Veggie spread: Mashed sweet potatoes with garlic, roasted carrots and cauliflower
$16 for the above and some other ingredients that went unused, mostly from Trader Joe’s

I pushed together two kid tables and taped a plastic table cloth over it, to set up the pumpkin decorating station. The chairs are rented

Decor:
Pumpkins for painting – Trader Joe’s – $10
6 kiddie sized chair rentals from Harbor Party Rentals $9
6 Paint smocks – amazon – $12
Acrylic paint set and paint brushes – Home Depot – $17

Paper supplies (we had nothing in the home) and decor such as balloons, banner, streamers, party hats, and some baking supplies that went unused, mostly from Walmart and Amazon – $50

Total spent: $190
