Today’s $5 meal idea involves boiling water! Quite literally!
For far less than $5, you could be full from eating dumplings / gyoza, which have and always will be one of my favorite foods.
Depending on the filling you purchase, you would fulfill carbohydrates from the skin, protein from the filling (assuming there is meat) and some veggies. I do not recommend eating a whole day of dumplings, but if you are in a pinch these are great for filling you.
My recommendations:
Trader Joe’s Chicken Gyoza Potstickers ($4 for the bag, $1.33 per serving)
Way Fong branded dumplings ($4 for the bag, $1-1.33 per serving)
Check around your local Chinatown to see if any dumpling stores might sell them in bulk as well.
Instructions:
- Bring at least 2 quarts of water to a rolling boil
- Add the dumplings and leave in for 2 – 3 minutes until they float to the top. Make sure to keep them from sticking to each other
- Optional – top with sriracha sauce or soy sauce
